Flower Study: Telemark

January 6, 2024

Nordic Canvas Folk Art Studio

Minnesota

Patti Goke will guide you through a study and exercise on Telemark flowers. Of all the rosemaling flowers the Telemark flower is the most fanciful. The flowers created are limited by one’s own imagination.

In this class you will see many examples of Telemark flowers, do a sketching exercise, and create some flowers of your own. While we will be looking at old examples, what you take away from this class you can use in contemporary painting.

Exploring Numedal

January 28, 2024

Vesterheim Museum Folk School

Decorah, IA

When you hear of the style of painting that comes from Numedal, what image comes to mind? It is hard to think of a typical Numedal piece, isn't it? That is because it had so many influences from Hallingdal and Telemark painters. Did you know that Thomas Luraas was one of the Telemark painters to leave his mark in Numedal? There were many "inside" influences too, because there were many creative and unique resident painters in Numedal whose styles were dissimilar.

Come and explore with Patti Goke, Vesterheim Gold Medalist, the different looks of the painted items from Numedal Valley. She has traveled twice to the valley known as the "Valley of the Middle Ages," both times with Vesterheim on Folk Art Study Tours. She has also done individual study of the style and painters.

Hand-Turned Nordfjord Style Ale Bowl

March 4-18, 2024

Vesterheim Museum Folk School

Decorah, IA

Join Vesterheim Gold Medalist Patti Goke for an opportunity to paint a Nordfjord-style ale bowl turned by master woodworker Roger Abrahamson! Rosemaling is an iconic and traditional art form, and this class will explore the stylistic elements of rosemaling in the Nordfjord style. This class is designed for experienced rosemalers.

Bowl turner Roger Abrahamson shares that "traditionally, decorated bowls were used to serve ale ceremonially, for special events such as weddings, Christmas, christenings, and other events. Each bowl is born from a green (freshly cut) log, then turned. Tool marks on the surface show the hand of the maker. As you see in old bowls, small imperfections and warpage does occur and is part of the natural process. The wood is worked green and seasoned after the bowl is created. Minimum abrasives are used as in the originals that inspire me. Each bowl is a unique creation, there are no two exactly alike."
