Who needs color charts? Proofing colors before painting a project can improve the color balance! Simplifying your palette can also improve color balance. In this class, we will make color charts to keep track of our mixes and we’ll do all of this without dirtying a brush. Color mixing is a good time to practice wielding a palette knife.

Join Vesterheim Gold Medalist Jan Norsetter to create some limited palettes and record them for reference for your rosemaling projects. We’ll also explore some examples of rosemaling with limited palettes from the Vesterheim collection.

Iconography Meets Nordic Tradition

Online Class

June 7-10, 2021

10A-11:30A and 4P-5P Central

Vesterheim Folk School

Decorah, Iowa

In this class, we will paint the icon of Mary holding Jesus up to her cheek (“Theotokos of Tenderness” in Orthodox Christianity). We will follow traditional iconography traditions, such as beginning class with prayer and understanding our work as a “prayer of the hands.”

A strong foundation in iconography will be taught, including how to mix the traditional egg tempera paints and highlight from a dark base. Additionally, we will use water-based size to apply real gold leaf to the halo outline and clothing details in a technique known as “gold assist.”

What sets this class apart from your typical iconography class is that we will leave large borders suitable for decorating with rosemaling. Rosemalers are welcome to design their own pattern for the border or use one from the instructor, but it will be mostly completed independently after the class is over.
