If you’ve ever thought about trying rosemaling, here’s a great opportunity to take the brush in hand! Rosemaling is the wonderful folk art of Norway that is based on the flowing scrolls and flowers that are made up of "C" and "S" strokes. This class introduces students to these basic strokes that are the foundation of rosemaling, as well as the detailed line work that completes a rosemaling project. The class will include demonstrations and plenty of hands-on practice. Students will be provided with all the supplies and materials needed to practice strokes and complete a project on board, including brushes, paints, medium, boards, and a palette knife. The class will be taught using acrylic paint. If you’ve painted with oil, this would be a good opportunity to explore acrylics. Rosemaling a Hand-turned Nordfjord Style Ale Bowl
March 3 and 10, 2025
Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum Folk School
Decorah, IA
Join Vesterheim Gold Medalist Patti Goke for an opportunity to paint a Nordfjord-style ale bowl turned by master woodworker Roger Abrahamson! Rosemaling is an iconic and traditional art form, and this class will explore the stylistic elements of rosemaling in the Nordfjord style. This class is designed for experienced rosemalers.
Unlike other styles of rosemaling the Nordfjord style was influenced by outside impulses. The style is not painted in Norway and it is up to us to keep it alive. The palette of colors is simple with no blending and shading. Many times geometric shapes are used. There generally are three elements to the painted bowls: the bottom design, the side design, and lettering on the outside.

Let's Design Nordfjord
March 21, 2025
Nordic Canvas Folk Art Studio
Minnesota
Join Patti Goke, VGM, and discover the little known style of Nordfjord rosemaling.
Nordfjord is a region on the west coast of Norway where early farmers, to supplement their income and to keep from starving, turned bowls, painted them with geometric shapes, stylized tulips and undulating S strokes. The colors of the palette were minimal and simple.
These bowls had a particular shape and were used for the drinking of beer and used for all festivities: weddings, christenings, Christmas, etc.
Of all the styles of rosemaling, Nordfjord is one of the most approachable of styles for everyone.
In our time together we will look at many pictures Patti has collected through the years, explore a bit of history and geography, and examine the three areas of decoration.

Primitive Elements & Figures in Rosemaling
September 18-21, 2025
Nordic Canvas Folk Art Studio
Minnesota
Join Bev Gunderson as we look at artifacts of rosemaling and other Norwegian folk art that have been collected over the years, we find a “visual language” as Nils Brekke from the 2005 Rosemaling Vesterheim Symposium put it. Hidden symbolism or stories almost always accompanied pictures and figures in the folk art of the time. These figures were often distorted or simplistic because of lack of training or knowledge of how to draw or paint them correctly.
In this class we will learn how to draw figures, animals, and buildings in correct proportion while still maintaining the folk style of the period and rosemaling. We will work on designing scenes with elements that will compliment your rosemaling. If you have family heritage pictures let's try designing your story from them, in the folk style that works with rosemaling.
