This two-part class is for rosemaling students who have never painted on curves before. Students will be learning to design and paint the outside of a bentwood box in the first three classes. During the second set of classes, students will  design/paint the inside and top of the same box.

Project Piece: Student’s choice of round or oval bentwood boxes at least 5” inch in diameter or at least 5” wide. Students are welcome to use curved boxes they may have acquired as “something good to paint”. 

 

Students should have at least one strokework class before enrolling in this class.

Norwegian rosemaling is a decorative folk art originating in the mid 1700s in rural Norway. In this class we’ll learn the fundamental painting process for Gudbrandsdal style rosemaling and some history of the art form. Using tracing paper and traditional oil paint, this class will focus on the basic paint brush strokes of this beautiful folk art.

Tara Austin has a Fine Arts degree in Painting and specializes in the folk art of Norwegian Rosemaling. Her company, Scandi Bijou, provides rosemaled décor for the modern lifestyle.

Rosemaling: A Style a Day

Have you tried rosemaling but are looking to broaden the range of styles?

 

Exploring Viksdal, Nordfjord, Setesdal, and Trondelag styles, you'll learn the traditional elements of the style in the morning, work on a project during the day, and add the finishing touches in the afternoon. Students will be provided with all the supplies and materials needed to paint four separate projects including wooden boards, a high-quality set of brushes, paints, and more. This class will be taught using oil paints. If you've painted with acrylics, this is a great opportunity to get comfortable with oils. Whether you've taken a couple of classes or have studied rosemaling for decades, you can expand your repertoire by exploring new styles!

This class will take place on four consecutive days and includes daily Zoom instruction equaling 11 hours of instruction during the week.

Rosemaling Inspired by Oskar Kjetsaa

Oskar Kjetsaa was an incredibly creative Norwegian rosemaler. He used characteristics of Telemark, Hallingdal, and other rosemaling styles to create a style all his own. In this class we will focus on the characteristics of Oskar’s style, including his use of color and linework, to create a project based on the flowers from one of his paintings. 

 

Included in the cost of registration is a complete kit of supplies (valued at $80) that includes a wooden bowl, oil paints, brushes, linseed oil, sandpaper, a palette knife, palette paper, and a treat from Vesterheim.

 

The listed class time is three live Zoom sessions on Saturday, February 26 (9:30 am-Noon and 3:00-5:00 pm CT) and Sunday, March 6 (2:00-5:00 pm CT).

Color Mixing for Rosemalers

Who needs color charts? Proofing colors before painting a project can improve the color balance! Simplifying your palette can also improve color balance. In this class, we will make color charts to keep track of our mixes and we’ll do all of this without dirtying a brush. Color mixing is a good time to practice wielding a palette knife.

 

Join Vesterheim Gold Medalist Jan Norsetter to create some limited palettes and record them for reference for your rosemaling projects. We’ll also explore some examples of rosemaling with limited palettes from the Vesterheim collection.

Find out about the stylistic elements of Viksdal style rosemaling while learning how to prepare and base coat your surface, hold and clean your brush, do line work, and so much more. This class is perfect for anyone looking to improve their linework!

 

The class will be taught using oil paints – if you've painted with acrylics, this would be a good opportunity to explore oil!

Rosemaling in Living Color

All skill levels are welcome.


Instructor will have a project in the Telemark style for students to paint. Intermediate students can select a pattern of their choice. Focus will be on techniques used to paint the design, mixing color and different values of each color. Students will also learn how to glaze to adjust a color. The design will be painted several times, on various background colors and color configurations.  

 

Students will be encouraged to experiment. Discussion will include color theory, distribution and the importance of value. There will also be a border where students will learn krilling. You will find it beneficial if you have taken the Rosemaling: Brush Techniques class or other painting class where you learned basic brush strokes. Paint with acrylic or oils.
