Rosemaling a Hand-Turned Nordfjord Style Ale Bowl

Vesterheim Norwegian-American Folk School
Decorah, IA
Join Vesterheim Gold Medalist Patti Goke for an opportunity to paint a Nordfjord-style ale bowl turned by master woodworker Roger Abrahamson! Rosemaling is an iconic and traditional art form, and experienced rosemalers in this class will explore the stylistic elements of rosemaling in the Nordfjord style.
Unlike other styles of rosemaling, the Nordfjord style was not influenced by outside impulses. The style is no longer painted in Norway and it is up to us to keep it alive. The palette of colors is simple with no blending and shading. Often, geometric shapes are used. There generally are three elements to the painted bowls: the bottom design, the side design, and lettering on the outside.
