Wet Paint

Come paint a Hallingdal design. Hallingdal is a style of Rosemaling known for its bold use of color and design elements inspired by flower baroque. Paint a Hallingdal design and learn more about the design elements that make this style so fun to paint. This class is for those with Rosemaling experience as well as a good class for those who have taken Julie’s Brush Techniques or Creative Liner Brush techniques class.

Richfield Community Education

Students will choose a pattern and provide paper or prepared woodenware on which to work. The instructor will give critiques and ideas to improve stroke work, color and design. Bring painting supplies. Patterns will be available. Students should have enough skill to work independently.

Continue to explore this beautiful folk art that originated in Norway. This class is for anyone who has taken a beginning Rosemaling class and has learned basic brush strokes. The class will include a project, or students can select their own project. Class will expand on color mixing and painting techniques. Participants can paint with oil or acrylic paint.

During this class, students will be introduced to the leafy scrolls of Gudbrandsdal style rosemaling from the forests of central Norway. Rosemaling is a folk art of Norway that has distinct styles in specific regions and valleys; however, rosemaling as a whole celebrates the visual language of Nordic regions. During its height in the 1800s, it was a way to bring the beauty of nature inside for the long winter months. In class, we will go over the basic technique and history of this decorative style of painting. Students will practice the fundamental painting process using oil paint on paper.

Wet Paint

Learn and practice foundational brush techniques to improve your art or folk art painting. Brush anatomy, brush care, and brush types (round, flat, filbert and liner brush) will be discussed. You will execute various brush strokes such as comma, teardrop, S, crescent, dipped crescent, spiral, circle stroke and dots, with a round brush. Learn why Rosemalers talk about the C and S stroke. Instructor will observe and assist with any stroke work challenges.

This class is for anyone who wants to develop brush skills and is encouraged for anyone who is interested in taking classes in the beautiful Norwegian decorative painting tradition called Rosemaling.

Burnsville Community Ed., ISD 191

Explore Norwegian Rosemaling. The class is designed for beginning and continuing painters. Stories and history are shared as you paint a Rosemaling design on an ornament step-by-step. All supplies are provided, but a supply list is available for students who want their own paints and brushes. Wear a paint apron or clothing you can get a little paint on. Adults and students age 13 and up are welcome to enjoy this fun folk art. For the best experience, please arrive on time.

North House Folk School

In this class students will work in oil paint to create gorgeous leaves and flowers from the boreal ecosystem using the techniques of rosemaling. We are fortunate at the North House campus to share a very similar boreal forest with Scandinavia and the homeland of rosemaling in Norway. During class we will talk about some historical aspects of rosemaling while creating modern forms using traditional brushstrokes. These boreal plant designs reminiscent of botanical illustration will be painted on heavy paper, perfect for framing. If students prefer to bring an unfinished wood piece to paint on, they are welcome. The instructor will also have some small blank wood items for sale in class.

This class will introduce or reintroduce you to the Norwegian folk art of rosemaling. We will be learning about the Telemark Rosemaling style with fanciful scrolls, flowers, and linework, as well as “C” and “S” strokes. At the end of the class, you will have learned about Norwegian rosemaling history, preparing your woodenware, paints, caring for brushes, and the brushstrokes that are key to the Telemark Rosemaling style. We provide the paints, brushes, and plate project. Come immerse yourself in the beautiful Norwegian rosemaling.

No painting experience is necessary and those who have painted before who are interested in learning or developing Rosemaling skills are welcome. Students can paint with oil or acrylic paint. The class will cover brush strokes, color mixing and how to paint a design. More experienced students can select a project of their own.

Discover the art of Norwegian rosemaling by creating a beautiful project on wood. In this class, you will learn all the essentials to start your rosemaling journey. Master the foundational C and S strokes, and get hands-on experience with proper tools and techniques. You will also learn how to prepare the wood, transfer patterns, mix paints, perfect your brush strokes, and care for your brushes. The class will be taught in oils, providing a rich, traditional experience.

North House Folk School

Celebrate the holiday season with a touch of hand-painted beauty. In this class, students will each paint three wooden ornaments and embellish them with the colorful art of rosemaling. Beginning and intermediate students will learn and revisit the basic elements of rosemaling using oil paint, then, with guidance, paint unique designs constructed from folk art flowers and scrolls. All painting materials and basic patterns will be supplied by the instructor.

The Os region in western coastal Norway is known for its fanciful flowers and bright colors, making it quite different from many of the other styles of rosemaling. In this course, students will study and practice basic techniques of this traditional decorative painting style. Plenty of one-on-one instruction will be provided. Some rosemaling experience is recommended; see Hallingdal courses for beginning levels. Students ages 16+ may register for this course on their own.

The Setesdal region in southern Norway is known for its simple and bright colors and symmetrical designs, making it different from many of the other styles of rosemaling. In this course, you’ll study and practice basic techniques of this traditional decorative painting style. You’ll then take your new skills and decorate a wooden mangleboard or mangletre.
