Introduction to Rosemaling Gudbrandsdal Style

During this class, students will be introduced to the leafy scrolls of Gudbrandsdal style rosemaling from the forests of central Norway. Rosemaling is a folk art of Norway that has distinct styles in specific regions and valleys; however, rosemaling as a whole celebrates the visual language of Nordic regions. During its height in the 1800s, it was a way to bring the beauty of nature inside for the long winter months. In class, we will go over the basic technique and history of this decorative style of painting. Students will practice the fundamental painting process using oil paint on paper.

Brush Techniques for Folk Art, Rosemaling

Learn and practice foundational brush techniques to improve your art or folk art painting. Brush anatomy, brush care, and brush types (round, flat, filbert and liner brush) will be discussed. You will execute various brush strokes such as comma, teardrop, S, crescent, dipped crescent, spiral, circle stroke and dots, with a round brush. Learn why Rosemalers talk about the C and S stroke. Instructor will observe and assist with any stroke work challenges.

This class is for anyone who wants to develop brush skills and is encouraged for anyone who is interested in taking classes in the beautiful Norwegian decorative painting tradition called Rosemaling.

Folk Art: Rosemaling Ornament

Explore Norwegian Rosemaling. The class is designed for beginning and continuing painters. Stories and history are shared as you paint a Rosemaling design on an ornament step-by-step. Rosemaling Plants from the Boreal Forest

March 19-21, 2027

In this class students will work in oil paint to create gorgeous leaves and flowers from the boreal ecosystem using the techniques of rosemaling. We are fortunate at the North House campus to share a very similar boreal forest with Scandinavia and the homeland of rosemaling in Norway. During class we will talk about some historical aspects of rosemaling while creating modern forms using traditional brushstrokes. These boreal plant designs reminiscent of botanical illustration will be painted on heavy paper, perfect for framing. If students prefer to bring an unfinished wood piece to paint on, they are welcome. The instructor will also have some small blank wood items for sale in class.

Beginning Telemark Rosemaling

This class will introduce or reintroduce you to the Norwegian folk art of rosemaling. We will be learning about the Telemark Rosemaling style with fanciful scrolls, flowers, and linework, as well as “C” and “S” strokes. At the end of the class, you will have learned about Norwegian rosemaling history, preparing your woodenware, paints, caring for brushes, and the brushstrokes that are key to the Telemark Rosemaling style. Rosemaling Holiday Ornaments

The Os region in western coastal Norway is known for its fanciful flowers and bright colors, making it quite different from many of the other styles of rosemaling. In this course, students will study and practice basic techniques of this traditional decorative painting style. Plenty of one-on-one instruction will be provided. Some rosemaling experience is recommended; see Hallingdal courses for beginning levels. Students ages 16+ may register for this course on their own.

The Setesdal region in southern Norway is known for its simple and bright colors and symmetrical designs, making it different from many of the other styles of rosemaling. In this course, you’ll study and practice basic techniques of this traditional decorative painting style. You’ll then take your new skills and decorate a wooden mangleboard or mangletre.
