September 5-8, 2024

Oskar Kjetså was an incredibly creative Norwegian rosemaler. He used characteristics of Telemark, Hallingdal, and other rosemaling styles to create a style all his own. In this class we will focus on the characteristics of Oskar’s style, including his use of color and linework, to create a project based on the flowers from one of his paintings.
The class photo serves as an illustration of Oskar Kjetså's artistic style, rather than a preview of what will be created during the class.

Painting en plain air
September 11-13, 2024
Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum Folk School
Decorah, IA
Working from life gives the plein air painter real time information that can be used on site or in the studio later. It helps to train the mind to pay attention to the essential elements of a scene and ignore the superfluous. It helps in identifying what is special about the scene you want to paint. The bonus is that you’re outside! When we are outside we are “burning daylight.” There’s a certain amount of discipline that comes with plein air since the light is continuously changing. We learn to capture the essence of a scene and do it with intention and eventually some speed.
