Setesdal is the name of the valley stretching along the Otra waterway in the north of the county of Aust-Agder in Norway. Due to its isolation, rosemaling appeared late here and was introduced from Telemark and Vest-Agder. After 1800, the distinctive Telemark style began to spread south to Setesdal by painters looking for work. At the same time, painters from Vest-Agder began working in the district and these two fundamentally different styles came together in Setesdal eventually merging into the Setesdal-Sirdal School. Vesterheim recently came into possession of a Setesdal trunk from 1852, possibly painted by Gunnar Svenson Vrastad, which illustrates the merging of these two styles. We will paint a tray with a desgin inspired by this trunk featuring long scrolls, three petal fan flowers, and many lines of fern like tear drops growing closely along the scrolls.
