Agder - Nancy Odalen

Nancy Odalen’s journey in the study of rosemaling began with her first Vesterheim class in 2001. She has taken numerous classes at Vesterheim and WSRA, from instructors teaching a variety of styles. She has completed her second apprenticeship through the Wisconsin Arts Board Folk Art Apprentice Program, with Andrea Herkert (VGM), as the master artist. Her second apprenticeship focused on the styles of Telemark, Hallingdal and Agder. She felt that developing new skills and understanding of styles other than Rogaland, within an environment of intense study, was important to broaden her knowledge of the history of Rosemaling. Odalen has taught beginning Rosemaling classes at the Sons of Norway – Mandt Lodge, Vesterheim Folk Art School, INRA and Western Rosemaling Association.

Os - Trudy Peach, VGM

Cost: $140 Member, $180 non-member  WAITLIST ONLY

My interest in Norwegian culture and heritage started to take root during childhood. While growing up in Wisconsin, we lived close to my mother’s parents, who were steeped in their Norwegian heritage. Having gained an appreciation of my Norwegian heritage from my grandparents, I was intrigued when, during high school, I came across a library book containing pictures of Norwegian rosemaling. In particular, a picture that captured my interest was a beautiful Rogaland panel painted by Bergljot Lunde. It was at that time that I became fascinated with the art of rosemaling and decided that one day I would learn this rich cultural art. I still find it exciting to learn new techniques, develop styles, and shape the beauty that evolves while painting a bare piece of wood. My life has certainly been blessed in the most wonderful way by learning and pursuing the art of my ancestors, Norwegian rosemaling.

Valdres - Kim Garrett

Cost: $130 Member, $170 non-member

I have been rosemaling for about 13 years. I fell in love with rosemaling the first time I took a class. My favorite styles are Valdres, Os, and Hallingdal, but I really like them all! I have taken several classes at Vesterheim with both Norwegian and Gold Medal artists over the years. I have also traveled to Norway 3 times to study original Scandinavian Folk Art from the 1800’s and taken classes from artists there and in Sweden. I’ve been teaching for about 6 years. I really enjoy sharing my love rosemaling and all things Scandinavian with others! I’m not much for competition, but I do like to take my Rosemaling and Dalmalning to the Minnesota State Fair so people can see Rosemaling. As a bonus, I have won several Blue ribbons and Sweepstakes ribbons there.

Hallingdal with Andrea Herkert, VGM

Cost: $350 Member, $400 Non-member

Level:  Intermediate to Advanced

In this class, we will focus on the characteristics and techniques of painting in the Hallingdal tradition. Hallingdal, along with Telemark, is considered one of the oldest, most defined of the rosemaling styles. With its rich, deep color palette, flowing "C" and "S" curves, distinctive line work, and highly developed use of pattern within the elements, Hallingdal Rosemaling grew from the traditions of the floral baroque design motif.

Two design projects will be our point of departure as we study the rosemaling traditions from the Hallingdal Valley. We’ll begin with a small piece to focus on the brushwork, use of color, and classic line work that are hallmarks of this style. A second, larger piece will offer a more in-depth look at the color and pattern use found in the flowers and scrolls, which flow together so distinctively in this style. While patterns will be offered for the designs, there will also be guidance given for those who wish to paint this style free hand in the traditional way. If you’ve not painted Hallingdal, this is a great chance to learn and if you have, this is an opportunity to get re-acquainted!
