How often when we see a rosemaled item with beautiful lettering do we not admire the lettering as well as the rosemaling. Lettering and rosemaling go hand in hand. Good lettering can enhance or take away from a rosemaled item and judges at shows consider lettering as part of the rosemaling design. Though it takes practice just like rosemaling, there are also strategies one can learn to accomplish beautiful lettering. Here's your chance to learn some of the tricks and strategies of doing good lettering to enhance your rosemaling. We will spend time learning about some of the types, history and methods of doing lettering. There will be samples and pictures to study. Bring your own projects you want to put lettering on and I can help you get started or a new project you would like to do lettering on and we will figure it out. Rogaland: The Integration of Telemark, Hallingdal, and Agder Styles - Nancy Odalen

Cost: $350/$400

The stylist interpretations of the combined elements from Telemark, Hallingdal, and Agder (Rococo and Baroque) were used to create Rogaland/Ryfylke style. This class will focus on the study of Rogaland/Ryfylke and will include a discussion on how the elements from Telemark, Hallingdal, and Agder integrate within this style. We will review Knut Hovden’s Gammel Rosemaling i Rogaland, Mappes I-V, and study items from the Vesterheim collection. A class project will be available and there will be demonstrations and individual assistance. You will be encouraged to try your hand at creating your own design or sketch from examples found in the Vesterheim collection or the Hovden Mappes. This class will be taught in oils. Acrylic painters are welcome, but they should have an understanding of colors and techniques in this medium. This design was interpreted from a “trunk from Ryfylke decorated in the floral style of Lars Aslaken, probably by this son Lars L. Lauvsnes, or by Nils Sjursen Stølen. The trunk belonged to Henriette Selland (Burreon), who came to America when she was four years old. Her family settled in Fargo, North Dakota. It was later passed on to Henriette’s granddaughter.” This piece is a smaller version of the small trunk that Nancy received a red ribbon for in Vesterheim's National Norwegian-American Folk Art Exhibition in 2019.

Old Telemark Style with Animals - Louise Bath

Cost: $285/$335

In this class, you will explore the many animals used in Norwegian rosemaling, such as horses (some with riders), lions, birds, stags, bears, and goats. You will also see fanciful animals, like unicorns, dragons, and mermaids. Animals are featured in many styles of rosemaling, including Hallingdal, Os, Hardanger, Vest Agder, and Telemark. In this class, lions and unicorns will be surrounded by transparent Telemark scrolls and flowers.

In this early style of Telemark, the linework is prominent and dances across the painting like calligraphy. It is exemplified by the painting of Thomas Lurass and his contemporaries. Although red or dark backgrounds were commonly used, the transparent technique is especially beautiful on a light background. There is little shading on the scrolls because the parallel veins (or nerve lines), with fine details and end knobs, take the place of shading. You will learn how to incorporate your favorite animal (Louise's is a lion!) on plates, boards, baskets, and boxes as a great focal point. They do not have to be realistic as the best examples are charmingly naïve! Louise will give you photos to use on your projects, including many fanciful painted animals that she saw on a 2016 Vesterheim Folk Art Tour to Norway, as well as those she has found online. You will be working on 12-inch plates but Louise will bring examples on other surfaces she has painted.

Intermediate level and above. Students should have knowledge of rosemaling strokes and linework and be comfortable working with oils or acrylic paints.

The Agder area is located close to the Rogaland area and you will find many design influences carried between these two areas, especially the pineapple flower as I refer to it. The Os region in western coastal Norway is known for its fanciful flowers and bright colors, making it quite different from many of the other styles of rosemaling. In this course, you’ll study and practice basic techniques of this traditional decorative painting style. Plenty of one-on-one instruction is provided. Some rosemaling experience recommended; see Telemark or Valdres courses for beginning levels. This course is open to students ages 12+ if accompanied by an adult, 16+ without.

Valdres - Lois Mueller, VGM

Cost: $165/$215

Valdres can be described as the “floral” style of rosemaling. For the most part the flowers are painted in 3 different formations. It could be a bouquet of mixed flowers, a grouping of flowers that hang from ropes, or a plant that grows from the ground. Scrolls and monochromatic scenes are frequently used as borders or as accents in the overall design. In this class, we will be painting a bouquet of mixed flowers. The bouquet will be framed with a scroll border or a unique scalloped design plus some line borders to further accent the design. After the plate is complete, we hope to work on a variety of borders that could be used in many styles of rosemaling.
